(Atlantic) Atlantic senior Haley Rasmussen scored her 1,000th career point, and the Trojans topped Clarinda 71-35 in a Hawkeye Ten Conference girls’ basketball game at Atlantic on Tuesday.
Rasmussen reached the milestone at the free-throw line in the 4th quarter. The senior led Atlantic with 22-points.
“I’m excited for her,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason. “She spends a lot of time in the gym, and reaching this milestone isn’t by chance; she’s earned this. I am very happy for her, I am glad it was at home, and we got to celebrate it this way.”
Rasmussen wasn’t the only contributor on offense. Jada Jensen scored 18-points, Tessa Grooms, 15, and Taylor McCreedy chipped in eight.
“We need everyone to score,” said Atlantic Head Coach Dan Vargason.“We can’t have success with just a couple of players putting up the points. Taylor McCreedy got it going tonight, Jada Jensen played a great basketball game, and Tessa Grooms had a big night for us as well.”
Clarinda kept it close in the first quarter trailing by only three, 17-14. The Trojans broke open a big lead in the second quarter outscoring the Cardinals 23-7 and held the visitors to just one field goal in the final frame.
Atlantic is now 5-6 on the season. Clarinda falls to 2-12.
