(Atlantic) Atlantic Head Football Coach Mike McDermott is resigning to spend more time with family.
Coach McDermott was hired to take over the program in 2016. Mr. McDermott is an Atlantic High School graduate and teaches social studies at Atlantic Middle School.
He began his coaching career in 1997 as a student assistant at Dakota State University before returning to Atlantic in 1998 as a freshmen coach. He served as the offensive coordinator for the Trojans from 1999-2002. He was hired as the offensive coordinator at Mitchell High School in South Dakota from 2003-2006. In 2007 he rejoined the Atlantic Football staff, returned and coached from 2007-2009. He coached Middle School Football from 2010 – 2015 and was hired as Head Football Coach in 2016.
The Trojans finished the 2020 campaign as the Class 2A District 9 Champions and made it to the third round of the state playoffs. Coach McDermott was selected as the Class 2A District 9 C0-Head Coach of the Year.
Coach McDermott will continue to coach girls and boys’ tennis and teach social studies at the Atlantic Middle School.
