(Griswold) Republican incumbent Tom Moore has secured another term representing Iowa House District 18, which includes Cass, Montgomery, and portions of Page Counties.
Moore defeated Democratic challenger Tripp Narup of Villisca, 8,140 to 3,757.
Moore, a retired educator and coach, was first elected to the Iowa House in 2015. A native of Grinnell, he attended Westmar College and Northwest Missouri State University.
Looking ahead, Moore says cancer remains a major issue facing Iowans. Iowa currently ranks second in the nation in cancer rates. He said lawmakers approved $8 million for cancer research during the most recent legislative session.
Moore identified tobacco use, obesity, and radon as some of the factors contributing to cancer rates. He also addressed concerns about nitrates, noting that major cities have water treatment systems and nitrate levels below national requirements. Moore also pointed out that cancer rates among farmers are lower than those in urban populations.
Eminent domain is another issue Moore plans to continue addressing. He says he supports individual property rights and opposes private companies using eminent domain for private financial gain.
Moore says education will also remain a priority, noting that he consistently supports more education funding than many of his colleagues in the Iowa House.
On issues involving men’s and women’s locker rooms, women’s sports and diversity, equity and inclusion, Moore says he takes a common-sense approach. He says those issues are important, but ultimately decisions should come down to common sense
