(Des Moines, IA) — Soaring food and gas prices are forcing more Iowans to go to food banks for help. Annette Hacker of Food Bank of Iowa says pantries in 55 counties have seen an uptick in foot traffic.
Hacker adds the Food Bank of Iowa is spending seven-thousand-dollars more a month on diesel fuel to transport the food compared to last year, up from the five-thousand-dollar increase reported in April. She says they would rather spend that money on food.
