(Guthrie Center, IA) — AC/GC overcame the heat on Friday night to beat Southwest Valley 20-7 in their Class A, District 7 opening game.
The Timberwolves won the toss and deferred so the Chargers made them pay — taking the opening drive 69 yards down the field and Morgun Nolte punched it in from 4 yards out to make it 7-0.
Southwest Valley could only get two first downs on their first two drives and the Chargers got another drive going in the 2nd quarter which was capped by a 21 yard TD run from Ryder Cline. AC/GC led 14-0 at the half.
Southwest could not move the ball on their first possession of the 2nd half and the Chargers took a short punt, started on their own 43 and moved the ball with nothing but runs. Cline got in the end zone on an 8 yard run to make it 20-0 after a missed extra point.
The Timberwolves finally got a good drive going when QB Wyatt Shires broke a 43 yard run and that set up a Kaden Greenwalt 9 yard TD to cut the lead to 20-7 but there was only 7:26 left in the game. Southwest could get no closer and the game finished like that.
