Iowa, 14 Other States Urging Transparency from Open AI
(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa is one of 15 states calling for transparency and accountability from OpenAI following the hacking of another AI company. The Iowa Attorney General’s Office says this comes after Open AI used an experimental model that hacked into AI company Hugging Face. In a letter, the states argue OpenAI may have violated state and federal consumer protection laws and are asking the company to preserve any relevant documents or data regarding the hack and to ensure that no OpenAI employees face backlash for reporting any unlawful activities.
Allegiant Flight 431 From Des Moines Strikes Bird, Returns To DSM
(Des Moines, IA) — A flight from the Des Moines International Airport hit a bird not long after takeoff Monday. Allegiant Flight 431 departed at about 7:45 Monday morning. Less than one hour into the flight to Newark, the pilots reported a bird strike and diverted back to Des Moines. An airport spokesperson says the flight landed safely and the aircraft underwent a mechanical evaluation before taking off again Monday afternoon.
UIHC Has Selected 12 Kid Captains For 2026 Hawkeye Football Season
(Iowa City, IA) — University of Iowa Health Care has selected a dozen former and current pediatric patients to be honored during the 2026 Hawkeye football season. The Kid Captains from Iowa and Illinois will be celebrated for their courage and resilience during football games this fall. Each game, one Kid Captain will take part in gameday activities and get special perks, like spending time with the team. Football fans also honor patients at the Stead Family Children’s Hospital next door to Kinnick every home game, by waving up at them at the end of the first quarter. The Kid Captains will be welcomed at Kinnick during Kids Day, a free open practice on August 15. The Hawkeyes will open the 2026 season at home against Northern Illinois on September 5.
Human Remains Found In Coralville Identified As Missing Man, Additional Remains Found
(Coralville, IA) — Human remains found in Coralville have been identified as a missing man. Police say 29-year-old Grant Leonard was reported missing in October 2023 after last being seen near Holiday Road. His cause of death has not been released. After Leonard’s body was recovered last month, police say more searches recovered additional human remains. An investigation is still ongoing.

Iowa’s Sales Tax Holiday is this Friday and Saturday, meaning clothes or shoes priced under 100-dollars can be purchased without the added six-percent state sales tax. It also applies to items purchased on those days by mail, catalog or online. However, you’ll pay full price for school supplies and other exempt items.
