(Des Moines, IA) — Iowa should raise taxes on cigarettes and nicotine products to help combat rising cancer rates in the state. That’s according to Rob Sand, the Democratic nominee for Governor.
Sand believes the state should fund more cancer treatment and research by raising taxes on cigarettes and potentially other nicotine products.
Sand made his comments after hearing from cancer survivors this morning. They pressed for policies that would enable early screening, expand access to treatment and fund more cancer research.
Iowa passed a 5-cent vape tax this year but taxes on cigarettes haven’t been raised since 2007.
