(Pottawattamie Co.) The Pottawattamie County Board of Supervisors approved a School Resource Officer (SRO) agreement and increased the cost for participating school districts by $2,000, raising the annual amount from $20,000 to $22,000 per district.
Supervisor Tim Wichman suggested increasing the rate.
SROs are responsible for building relationships with students, enforcing laws, assisting with school-related investigations, helping with emergency planning, participating on school safety teams, and providing classroom presentations. SROs are not school disciplinarians. School administrators remain responsible for student discipline, while SROs determine when law enforcement action is appropriate.
Supervisor Jeff Jorgensen noted that the school districts are very appreciative of having School Resource Officers in their schools.
SROs remain employees of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office. The School Resource Officer Agreement is between the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office and the Treynor, Underwood, Riverside, AHSTW, and Tri-Center Community Schools.
