(Iowa) The Iowa Department of Natural Resources will begin a research project on blue catfish in Iowa lakes on July 1.
John Lorenzen, Fisheries Biologist, said blue catfish have the potential to grow very large. The current Iowa state record is a 105-pound blue catfish caught in the Missouri River last summer.
Lorenzen said researchers will examine the population dynamics of the species, including growth, recruitment, mortality and survival rates, and age structure. The results of the study will help the DNR better understand how to manage this unique sport fish.
