(Avoca) Regional Water Rural Water Association, based in Avoca, is concerned about a petition that has been submitted requesting a Conditional Use Permit for property located within Sections 21 and 22 of Fairview Township (78-39), near Highway 59 in the vicinity of 311 Hwy 59. The request seeks approval for a Special Use Permit that would allow the construction and operation of a sand and gravel extraction, processing, and sales facility on land currently zoned A-1 Agricultural District.
Regional Water has expressed concerns about the proposed gravel pit’s proximity to its wellfield. Officials say the operation could significantly impact groundwater resources that supply drinking water to customers throughout the area.
The Shelby County Planning and Zoning Board of Adjustment will hold a public hearing on the proposal on Monday, June 29, at 9:00 a.m. in the Shelby County Board of Supervisors Meeting Room, located on the lower level of the Shelby County Courthouse in Harlan.
Members of the public are invited to attend and may provide comments in support of or opposition to the proposed permit. Comments may be made in person, through an agent or attorney, or submitted in writing.
The hearing is open to all interested parties, not just those who received the official notice. Residents are encouraged to notify neighboring property owners or others who may be affected if they have not received information about the hearing.
Regional Water posted the Public hearing on their website and stated “Given the efforts that have been made and the restrictions that have been in place to protect our water resources, we believe this proposal presents too great a risk to the water supply our customers depend on,” Regional Water stated
