(Red Oak) Authorities arrested the suspect in the June 17 shooting incident involving a Police Officer.
According to the Red Oak Police Department, 24-year-old Sam Thomas Sapphire Morgan, of Red Oak, was arrested at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Monday, June 22, for attempted murder. The charge stems from a June 17 incident in which officers were fired upon.
Authorities said the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigation issued the warrant for Morgan’s arrest.
Morgan was taken to the Montgomery County Jail and held on no bond.
On Wednesday, June 17, at approximately 7:54 p.m., officers with the Red Oak Police Department were dispatched to 905 Highland Avenue in Red Oak for a reported welfare check.
Upon arrival, officers made contact with the sole occupant of the residence. During the encounter, the individual later identified as Morgan, exited the residence and fired multiple rounds from a handgun in the direction of a Red Oak Police Officer who was positioned a short distance away.
The suspect then raised the handgun in an apparent attempt to fire additional shots at the officer. In response to the immediate and ongoing threat, a Red Oak Police Officer discharged his service weapon, striking the suspect and stopping the threat.
The suspect was provided emergency medical treatment at the scene by personnel from the Red Oak Fire Department. The individual was subsequently transported to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital and later airlifted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center for further treatment.
The incident remains under investigation.
