(Red Oak) Montgomery County Veterans Affairs Director Ed Young appeared in front of the board of supervisors this morning, asking for their help. Young says the state of Iowa gives each county $10,000 per year, a total of $990,000 the state spends on Veterans Affairs.
Young says some of the larger counties in the state have been complaining that they need more money. Young says in the view of the legislature, they are not going to give the larger counties more money; instead, they are going to redistribute the funds by population. Young says if this plays out, Montgomery County will lose $7,451.00, which is almost three-fourths of the current allocation.
Young encouraged the supervisors to get a hold of their legislators, because this will put a stranglehold on the county.
Supervisor Mark Peterson says if this were to go through, the ten larger counties seeking more money would gain a total of only $177,000.00 or ($17,700.00) each, while Montgomery County would lose three-quarters of its funding for the county Veterans Affairs Program. Peterson mentions Adams County, for example, would receive just under $1,000.00.
