(Atlantic) The Civil Air Patrol (CAP) is the official auxiliary of the United States Air Force, established in 1941 at the onset of World War II. Today, CAP continues to serve through three primary Air Force–assigned missions: Emergency Services, Aerospace Education, and Cadet Programs.
Community members are invited to meet the dedicated members of the Civil Air Patrol and learn more about how the organization serves the area on Sunday, January 18, beginning at 2 p.m. at the Armory.
The Cadet Program serves youth ages 12–18, focusing on leadership development, aerospace education, physical fitness, and character building. Adult members may also participate by training and serving the community within any of CAP’s missions. Emergency Services offers opportunities to assist with search-and-rescue operations and disaster response efforts.
Atlantic is home to the Southwest Iowa Composite Squadron, which typically includes 18–30 members. Cadets and adult volunteers come from Atlantic, Harlan, Avoca, Red Oak, and Anita. The squadron meets Tuesday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Armory, where members advance their education and training.
Mary McBride and other adult volunteers from Atlantic, Harlan, and Red Oak provide leadership and oversight. As cadets progress in rank, they take on increased responsibility, helping plan activities and lead training for younger members.
Both cadets and adults have opportunities to attend training events across Iowa and throughout the country in areas of CAP that interest them. CAP also offers funding assistance to help keep uniforms and programs affordable.
This program is supported by ARISE and is free to attend.
