(Atlantic) The Atlantic girls’ basketball team continues to build momentum following the holiday break. The Trojans snapped a three-game losing streak last Friday with a road win at Shenandoah and followed it up Tuesday night by defeating Glenwood 50–40 at Atlantic.
Madison McLaren led a balanced Atlantic scoring effort with 12 points, while Katrina Williams added 10. Zoey Kirchhoff chipped in eight points, Peyton McLaren scored seven, Makenna Schroeder finished with five, Kaitlyn Hickman had three, and Brynn Lamp added two. A key factor in the win was Atlantic’s efficiency at the free-throw line, where the Trojans converted 18 of 23 attempts.
Glenwood was led by Maggie Smith, who scored 17 points and knocked down five three-pointers, including a buzzer-beating half-court shot. Kelsey Hughes added 11 points, while Maggie McChesney scored five, Ava Hernandez had four, and Mya Donscheski finished with three.
Scoring came at a premium early, with Atlantic holding a 10–5 edge after the first quarter and extending the lead to 22–15 at halftime. The Trojans pushed the margin to 32–21 in the third quarter, sparked by three-point baskets from freshmen Madison McLaren and Kaitlyn Hickman.
Smith kept the Rams within striking distance, drilling four three-pointers in the third quarter, including a half-court heave at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 37–32 heading into the final period. Glenwood closed to within two points at 37–35, but Atlantic responded with a decisive 13–5 run down the stretch to secure the 50–40 victory.
Atlantic improves to 6–5 and travels to Kuemper on Friday night. Glenwood falls to 5–4 and will host Shenandoah on Friday.
