(Oakland, IA) — Riverside advanced to the Western Iowa Conference volleyball tournament final with a win on Tuesday over Underwood 3-0 (25-11, 25-15, 25-13). Sydney Somers had a big night with 15 kills and 4 aces. Bentley Rone added 3 kills, 12 assists and 4 digs. Sophia Fenner had 15 digs and Maebry Rice added 3 aces. Bulldogs Head Coach Brooke Flathers says that Underwood serves dictated that the passes went to the outside and that’s where Somers can swing
Riverside is now 35-0 on the season — they have not lost a set in the WIC tournament so far — they have only lost 3 sets all season. Flathers says that the Bulldogs have been tested, every team comes and plays their best against her team
Riverside beat the Cardinals in three sets a week ago — the Cardinals beat Missouri Valley in the semifinals in 3 sets and are led by Senior Nora Konz with 239 kills which is 6th in the WIC behind Somers who has 254 kills which ranks 5th. Junior Rylee Hemmingsen can also hit it with 191 kills. One area that Riverside has a big advantage over Treynor is blocks — Riverside Sophomore Vivian Gross leads the conference with 58, Madison Kelley is 3rd with 48 and Lilli Reed is 5th with 37. Riverside has 215 team blocks which is tops in the Western Iowa while the Cardinals are 7th out of 9 teams. Flathers has seen her team’s play at the net improve
Riverside will play Treynor Thursday night in the WIC finals, the match will be in Avoca. Riverside is the #1 seed in Class 2A, Region 7 and will play the winner of Southwest Valley and Underwood on Wednesday, October 22, coverage on KSOM. Treynor is the two seed in Class 2A, Region and 2 and will play the winner of Logan Magnolia and MVAOCOU next Wednesday.
