(Ames, IA) — Can there be any position on Iowa State’s football team that is deeper than linebacker? The Cyclones were decimated at the position last season by injuries so maybe Head Coach Matt Campbell’s biggest challenge this season is figuring out playing time for all the healthy bodies.
Former walk on and now Senior Caleb Bacon is back after getting hurt on a special teams in the opener against North Dakota. Harlan Alum and Junior Will McLaughlin missed the first 9 games before returning for the final four. Sophomore Cael Brezina battled injuries all of last season but still managed to play in 8 games with 7 starts. Senior Zachary Lovett missed four games. Junior John Klosterman played in the first four game before suffering a season ending injury. Junior Carson Willich missed the entire season. Then there are returning Sophomores Beau Goodwin, Rylan Barnes, and Nick Reinicke and don’t forget Junior Kooper Ebel who is the only returning player who started all 14 games last season.
Campbell says they will use each player to their strengths
Campbell says they will take things game by game but it is a good problem to have.
Iowa St. will open the season next Saturday, August 23 against Kansas St. — they leave for Dublin, Ireland next Wednesday. Coverage of the Cyclones all season long on KSOM.
