(Area) — The Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association named the All State Teams for the 2025 season. Garrett Luett from Underwood was named Co-Captain of the 2A team and also named to the Super Team made up of players from all four classes. Luett led the Eagles to the 2A Semifinals with a sterling 11-0 pitching record with a 0.81 ERA and 128 strikeouts. The Junior hit .603 with 6 HR and 25 RBI, scored 46 runs, hit 12 doubles and 3 triples. His most incredible stat was walking 35 times — 15 intentionally — and striking out just once. Luett shared the 2A captain spot with Braylon Bingham of the 2A state champs Pleasantville.
Luett set school records for hits and in pitching strikeouts. Head Coach Andy Vanfossan says he’s the best player in Underwood history
Vanfossan says also that Luett dealt with the attention that comes with a future University of Iowa player in a very mature manner
Underwood had two other players honored in Class 2A — Senior Nick Hackett was named to the 2nd team, batting .338, 0, 26 and had a .958 fielding percentage and Junior Ryker Adair was named to the third team, hitting .333, 2, 21 and scored 29 runs.
Clarinda had two players named 3rd team All-State in 2A — Sophomore Ryan Wagoner at Catcher batted .406, 0, 16 and had a fielding percentage of .983 behind the plate and Cooper Phillips, a Senior Outfielder, hit .413, 0, 13.
In Class 3A, Harlan’s Senior Catcher Hayden Soma was named first team All-State, batting .414, 5, 41 with a .977 fielding percentage. Soma says it is a fantastic feeling to get an award like this to justify all the work that he put in. He believes there is one thing that set him apart
Soma transferred to Harlan his freshman season, got to play in the state tournament as a Sophomore and Junior and had the time of his life
Soma will heading to Iowa Central in Ft Dodge on August 18 but before that he is showing pigs and cattle at the Iowa State Fair which he loves doing
Also for Harlan, Cyclones Sophomore Cade Nelson was named 3rd team at 2B, batting .370, 0, 31 with 40 total hits and 28 runs scored.
In Class 1A, the Heydon brothers at Coon Rapids Bayard both made it to the All-State team. Junior Cal was first team all-state at 1B, hitting .506, 5, 24 and pitching was 10-1 with a 0.51 ERA and 105 strikeouts. Sophomore Ty was selected third team all state at C, batting .430, 1, 30 and made 9 pitching appearances going 1-1 with a 1.29 ERA.
AC/GC’s Tommy Skram was named 3rd team All-State — the Junior OF hit .417, 0, 15 with 33 runs scored and 28 stolen bases and only had 2 errors playing center field
Skram says he was shooting for the All State honors eventually but didn’t think it would come this year
Also in Class 1A, Logan Magnolia’s Senior Pitcher Kaleb Kuhl was selected 2nd team All -State — Kuhl led the Panthers to the state tournament for the first time in school history with a 5-4 record and 0.72 ERA with 80 strikeouts plus hit .519, 0, 20.
Three Lenox players got All State honors: First Team honors to Senior OF Gabe Funk (.427, 1, 30) and Junior Utility Dawson Evans (.505, 5, 49, 46 runs) and 3rd team honors went to Senior Laramie Stoaks at Utility (.400, 1, 35; 5-1, 1.89 ERA).
