(Fort Dodge, IA) — Riverside is back in action at the State Softball tournament tonight and face top seeded Wayne, first pitch at 7 pm, coverage on KSOM.
The Bulldogs bats were hotter than the weather in the first round on Tuesday with a 14-6 win in 5 innings over Newell Fonda. Everybody reached base except one player and Riverside pounded out 12 hits — they scored 4 times in the bottom of the 5th to end the game on the 8 run rule.
Adaline Martens led Riverside at the plate going 3-4 with a double, a RBI and two runs scored. The Junior was originally going to play catcher but moved to 2nd base when she came down with an arm injury. It has not affected her bat, she is hitting .482 in the season and the on base percentage is almost .600 so Head Coach Lacie Patterson moved her up in the line up
The only senior on the team is Elly Henderson who went 2-4 last night with 2 runs, 2 RBI and a stolen base. She is the only slap hitter on the team but she leads the Bulldogs with 30 stolen bases and covers a lot of ground in the outfield says Patterson
Against Newell Fonda, Freshman Peyton Schafer gave up 6 earned runs on 7 hits and walked 4 — not her best game but she battled through adversity and every time the Mustangs scored, the Bulldogs had a response
Wayne beat Highland 7-4 in the first round. Izzie Moore allowed 4 runs, 3 earned on 10 hits, did not walk anybody and struck out 12. For the season, Moore has an ERA of 1.14 and is third in Class 1A with 252 strikeouts. The Falcons were the Pride of Iowa conference champs and hit .366 as a team. Senior Ava Whitney leads with a .524 batting average with 6 HR and 37 RBI. Sophomore Ella Whitney is hitting .444 with 49 stolen bases which is 2nd in Class 1A. Moore is a senior who its .458 with 7 HR and 29 RBI. It is a big challenge for Riverside but Patterson likes the way her team is feeling right now
Fourth seeded Riverside is 25-3, top seeded Wayne is 26-2, game time tonight is at 7 pm, coverage on KSOM.
