(Washington D.C.) Representatives Zach Nunn (IA-03) and Lauren Underwood (IL-14) recently introduced the Strong Farms, Strong Futures Act, bipartisan legislation designed to strengthen the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP) and ensure farmers receive the resources necessary to implement sustainable agricultural practices.
Nunn said this also expands eligibility for both conventional as well as organic farmers while giving producers the flexibility to choose practices that fit their operation.
Nunn highlighted the support received from Iowa farmers.
In summary, the bill aims to incentivize farmers to adopt sustainable and conservation-focused practices that improve soil health, boost carbon sequestration, and cut greenhouse gas emissions. The legislation expands the Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), with a focus on perennial production systems. The bill includes inflation-adjusted payments to ensure fair, long-term compensation for farmers’ stewardship efforts. It also streamlines access and contract renewals for both conventional and organic producers, while offering climate mitigation bundles and improved flexibility for implementing science-based conservation strategies.
