(Anita) Dr. Pam Stangeland, the Nodaway Valley-Cam Superintendent, presented to both boards this week, focusing on establishing a strong superintendent-school board relationship. Stangeland says one of the things that makes or breaks a good board-superintendent relationship is to clarify expectations from the start. She says the Iowa Association of School Boards conducted a work session at Tuesday’s board meeting at Nodaway Valley.
Occasionally, board members propose special projects or initiatives that they believe are crucial for the effective operation of the district. If this happens, Stangeland expresses interest in being informed. Otherwise, her focus is on a few key areas that have the most significant impact on students, staff, financial health, and the long-term sustainability and well-being of the districts.
One of the things they have discussed is ensuring they have access to high-quality curricular materials, making sure that while they are in their classrooms, they have the materials that will provide the most value.
Another key focus is on the district’s financial security. This includes ensuring that facilities are operating efficiently, managing expenditures appropriately, and exploring ways to increase the district’s spending authority and reduce expenses. This will help the district be prepared to take action when the right opportunities arise.
