(Underwood, IA) — Two Western Iowa Conference rivals will battle in a Class 2A, District final tonight as Treynor visits Underwood in baseball action, coverage on KSOM.
The Eagles won both regular season meetings 5-1 and 5-0 and both teams were led on the mound by Garrett Luett. In game one, the Junior threw 97 pitches and allowed 1 unearned run on 7 hits, did not walk anybody, hit one batter and struck out 13. In game two, Luett threw a 1 hit shutout with no walks, a hit batter and also struck out 13. Luett is available to pitch after throwing 90 pitches in Wednesday’s 2-0 win over Clarinda.
The Cardinals used Sophomore Reece Vortmann in the 2nd game — he went 3 innings and allowed 4 ER on 3 hits, 2 BB, 2 HBP and 2 K although he was effective at times — Underwood made adjustments the 2nd time through the order. In game one, Treynor used Senior Will Parrott and in 6 innings, he allowed 5 runs, 4 earned on 3 hits, walked 6, hit one batter and struck out 7. Luett actually went 0-3 in that game one of the few games this season that the star has been hitless.
Treynor’s best pitcher is Easton Hill who Underwood has not faced — Hill threw 67 pitches for the Cardinals in their first round win over Red Oak so he is eligible to throw tonight. For the season, Hill has been in 10 games with 9 starts and 5-4 with a 2.10 ERA. He has 53 strikeouts in 43 1/3 innings.
Underwood will likely go with Luett (9-0, 0.95 ERA) but Easton Robertson (4-0, 1.02) is also a possibility and Freshman Blake Brensel (3-2, 2.47) could also be an option.
Treynor is 14-11, Underwood 22-2, game time 7 pm, coverage on 96.5 FM KSOM.
