(Griswold, IA) — Strong hitting from the top to the bottom of the order for the Griswold-CAM Tigers was the key to success against the Underwood Eagles in the regional quarterfinal.
The Tigers had 10 hits in the outing against Eagles pitcher Allissa Fischer, who walked one and hit two batters. Third baseman Keeley Kinney was responsible for three of those hits, singling twice and lining one into the right-center field gap for an RBI double. Kinney said that her patience at the plate lead to her strong hitting performance:
Griswold-CAM’s ace Ailey Wahlert started and finished the game in the circle, striking out three and walking eight. The Eagles left 10 stranded throughout the game with six hits and one error. Underwood left the bases loaded in the sixth during a two-out rally when leadoff hitter Mary Stephens flew out to left field, with both of their runs crossing the plate just before. In their final chance, left fielder Lillie Robertsen popped out to catcher Courtney Follmann, leaving two more on base. Stephens went 2-for-4 with a double in the third inning and a single in the fifth, center fielder Lilly McHenry walked three times and singled in the sixth, eventually crossing the plate. The Underwood Eagles finish their season at a 9-23 record.
Leadoff hitter Marissa Askeland had three singles for the Tigers, Brystol Wyman courtesy ran and scored for Ailey Wahlert who singled in the fifth, and Daphna Wahlert went 2-for-3 with three RBI’s on a double in the second and a single in the fifth. The Tigers advance to the Region 2 semi-finals, where they will host the 27-6 West Monona Spartans. Head coach Jodi Russell says that it’ll be business as usual in practice in order to prepare for the next round:
Griswold-CAM takes on the Spartans on Friday with the first pitch being at 7:00 P.M.
