(Undated) — Medical and safety experts are looking to raise awareness about the dangers of fireworks.
Cynthia Garcia, whose 11-year-old son was severely injured after he lit an unused aerial shell that he thought was a smoke bomb, is hoping to protect other families.
Last year, there were more than 14 thousand fireworks-related injuries reported in the U.S., most of them involving the hands, head, and ears. Eleven people were killed.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission is reminding people to never let children play with fireworks, keep a bucket of water or a hose close by in case of a fire and carefully follow instructions on packaging when handling fireworks.
