(Corning, IA) — The Southwest Valley school district has a new school superintendent that started this week — Joe Erickson was in Buffalo Center, Iowa which is a stones throw away from the Minnesota state line. Erickson was the Superintendent of North Iowa CSD but he says the goal was always to come closer to home which he is now
Erickson is coming to a school district that is in a strong position. He says the academic standards of the district in relation to Iowa assessments is very good and has been sustained over time. Erickson is also coming in with a brand new elementary school in Corning that is set to open this school year. There’s no need for a public referendum, no need to try to get community support, the school is built and ready to go says Erickson and he credits the previous superintendent Chris Fenster who left to go to South Hardin. Erickson says the other facilities in the district have been well maintained
Erickson says they will have a walk through the new Corning Elementary school on July 14 and he thinks staff could be in the building on August 1. As for the faculty, Erickson says they will be working on filling the staff this month
Erickson is now working on connecting with everybody in the district and even re-connecting with people in the area.
