(Atlantic) An open house and ribbon cutting was held today for ISU’s “Murals in Community” project in Atlantic.
A large mural now spans the south and east sides of the old YMCA building at 703 E. 14th Street. Anna Segner, an Associate Teaching Professor at Iowa State University, was selected as an Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fellow, a position that came with funding support. Segner wanted to create a more community-based mural.
Segner then started working with Mayor Grace Garrett and Council Members Emily Kennedy and Elaine Otte to select a building for the mural.
Anna Segner and ISU Art Design student Jeff McAllister spoke about the mural design, which was inspired by a Landscape, Architecture and Engineering class that focused on Bull Creek.
Eleven students worked on painting the mural, which took around 10-days to complete. Jeff McAllister has never done a mural project like this before.
Anna Segner thanked the many city officials, community members and businesses that helped the students out during this project.
