(Guthrie Center, IA) — AC/GC has been one of the more improved teams this season in the West Central Conference and Junior Tommy Skram has given them a spark at the top of the line up. Tonight they host Madrid with coverage on KSOM.
The Chargers have a little old fashioned style to the way they play — scrappy, hit and run, move guys over, steal bases, play station to station baseball, whatever you want to call it and Skram is in the middle of it as the leadoff hitter and leading base stealer. He has 17 stolen bases and is batting .423 with an incredible on base percentage of .565. He does have two triples but the team only has 21 extra base hits all season
Skram also does some pitching although in 5 appearances he has an 8.84 ERA and he says he had some rough starts against good teams. The top two guys have been Senior Noah Kading and Junior Blaize Dorsey
Skram plays football, basketball, track but he says baseball is his first love thanks to his Dad.
Skram says he is a fan of the New York Mets — his Dad fell in love with the team when they won the 1986 World Series and Tommy grew up watching David Wright and Jacob deGrom. He has been to several major league games — the Cubs in Wrigley, the White Sox on the South Side, the Twins, and even the Colorado Rockies.
Skram has worked hard at improving his game — his batting average is up 140 points from last season, his on base percentage is up 180 points, he does not strike out much — just 12 times in the last two seasons. He says if AC/GC continues to play their hard charging style it will help them when the playoffs begin this Saturday
AC/GC will host Madrid tonight with the first pitch at 7pm, coverage on KSOM. The Chargers will host AHSTW in the first round of the 1A playoffs this Saturday.
