(Underwood, IA) — Underwood suffered their first loss of the season on Tuesday but on Thursday night they got a big performance from the star and future Iowa Hawkeye Garrett Luett and got back to their winning ways beating Treynor 5-0.
Luett is one of the best players in the state — if not THE best and he proved it against the Cardinals throwing a 1 hit shutout and hitting two solo home runs.
In the bottom of the first, Treynor starter Reece Vortmann walked one and hit two batters to load the bases and Easton Robertson hit a shot to left center but Luke Christensen dove to make a spectacular catch and saved at least three runs. Vortmann retired the Eagles in order in the 2nd inning but with one out in the 3rd, Luett drove the first pitch over the wall in center for his 4th home run of the season. Underwood was not done — Ryker Adair singled and Gavin Miles walked. After Nick Hackett popped out, Robertson walked to load the bases again and Hudson Ross drove one to the outfield for a 2 RBI single. Ross then took off mid pitch for 2nd base and Vortmann stopped in mid wind up which is a balk and that forced in Robertson and Underwood had a 4-0 lead.
Luett did the rest — he retired the first 10 batters and gave up a one out single to Will Parrott in the 4th. Parrott was forced out at 2nd on a grounder from Brody Larsen and Luett struck out Ethan Hill to end the half inning. He hit Vortmann with one out in the 5th and Christensen reached on a catchers interference with 2 outs but in between Luett struck out the side. He struck out the side again in the 7th and tied a season high 13 strikeouts in one game. Luett also added another HR, a solo shot to left in the 6th inning for a little insurance.
Underwood got its 18th win of the season and remains undefeated in the Western Iowa Conference.
For the Eagles: Hudson Ross was 1-3 with 2 RBI and 1 run. Ryker Adair was 3-4 with a SB and run scored.
