(Ames) The Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) has reached a new milestone in mobile identification technology. Iowans can now add their driver’s license or state-issued ID to Google Wallet, making it easier than ever to present secure digital identification at more than 200 TSA checkpoints and participating businesses across the state.
To be eligible, users must have a valid Iowa driver’s license or photo ID and an Android phone running version 9 or later. Adding the ID is free and voluntary, but the DOT emphasizes that residents must still carry their physical ID, as not all businesses or agencies are equipped to verify digital versions.
The process is simple:
-Open the Google Wallet app.
-Tap “Add to Wallet” > “ID” > “Driver’s license or state ID” > “Iowa.”
-Follow the prompts to verify identity through the Iowa DOT.
Digital IDs are encrypted, requiring personal authentication to access, and information is only shared after the user has reviewed and approved the request. In the event a phone is lost or stolen, the mobile ID can be erased remotely.
The mobile ID can be used at TSA checkpoints—including Des Moines and Eastern Iowa airports—and at businesses with mobile ID verification technology using NFC or QR codes. Businesses interested in accepting mobile IDs can find more information at iowadot.gov/mvd/MID-businesses.
