(Coon Rapids) The Coon Rapids-Bayard Crusaders are having a terrific baseball season as they sit with a record of 18-3 and are currently ranked No. 4 in 1A. CR-B is currently leading the Rolling Valley Conference standings with a record of 9-0.
As a team, the Crusaders bat .290 and score around 8 runs per game on the season. They are being led by junior Cal Heydon. Heydon leads the team in almost every statistical category with the bat in his hands. Batting .500 on the year, he leads the team in hits, runs, doubles, triples, home runs and on base percentage. Heydon has been a starter for the Crusaders since his 8th grade year and has batted over .400 every season.
When talking about his approach, Cal is looking for fastball, but is ready for anything.
As a pitcher, Heydon has been unhittable. Posting a 7-0 record in seven appearances, with a 0.41 ERA and holding opponents to a .113 batting average. Heydon hasn’t been beating himself on the mound this year, with a 7-1 strikeout to walk ratio, he’s pounding the strike zone and not allowing free passes.
Cal says he is more comfortable on the mound with his brother, Ty, behind the dish.
Cal is a multi-sport athlete and has shown talent in more sports than just baseball. However, if the opportunity is there Cal would like to continue to play baseball at the next level.
Cal is only a junior and has more room to grow with one more year as a high school athlete.
