(Griswold, IA) — The Griswold CAM Softball team will be the number one seed when the Corner Conference tournament starts play on Thursday. The Tigers are led by Senior Shortstop Marissa Askeland who is part of a deep line up this season.
Askeland is batting .472 to lead Griswold and has scored 28 runs, hit 7 doubles, 1 triple, 2 HR, stolen 12 bases and has only committed 6 errors at a position that gets more touches than most. Askeland says that this line up is deep from 1 to 9 so it does not put a lot of pressure on any one hitter
The Tigers were undefeated until losing two games at the Underwood tournament June 14 and then lost to Exira EHK Audubon this past Saturday but Askeland believes that the team has learned from their defeats
Askeland says softball has been a family thing — her Dad introduced the sport to Marissa and her sister Makenna who is playing at Simpson College. The Askeland sisters did play together at Griswold and Marissa says she has learned a lot from her
Askeland has decided to forgo playing college softball and will be going to Iowa St. to major in elementary education — she has had experience working with Pre School to 1st grade kids and wants to do that for a career. So this will be her swan song in sports and she cannot wait for the playoffs to begin
Griswold-CAM will play the winner of Sidney and Stanton in the Corner Conference semifinals on Thursday night.
