(Pottawattamie Co) A vehicle, fleeing a Pottawattamie County Deputy, veered off Highway 92 and into a ditch, resulting in a fatal accident.
The Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office says on Sunday, at 3:15 a.m., a Deputy observed a 2021 Mercedes passenger car crossing the center line in the area of Highway 92 and Hope Lane. A traffic stop was initiated and the vehicle began to elude law enforcement. The Deputy had activated the emergency lights and sirens while the vehicle continued east on Highway 92. In the 31000 block of Highway 92, the Mercedes left the roadway and entered the south ditch. The impact with the ditch caused severe damage to the vehicle.
Deputies discovered that the vehicle was occupied by one male who was identified as 44-year-old David Hawkins from Omaha, Nebraska. They observed that Hawkins had sustained serious injuries. They requested emergency medical services and began life saving measures. Treynor Fire and Rescue arrived on location. Hawkins was pronounced deceased on scene.
Traffic accident investigators responded to the scene. The cause of the accident is under investigation.
