(Area) An Extreme Heat Warning has been issued for southwest Iowa.
The warning is in effect from Noon Friday to 9:00 p.m. Sunday for Audubon, Guthrie, Cass, Adair, Adams, Taylor, Shelby, Harrison, Pottawattamie, Mills, Montgomery, Fremont, Page counties.
Residents are urged to prepare for dangerously hot conditions, with heat index values expected to soar between 105 and 110 degrees throughout the weekend.
The prolonged stretch of heat is expected to intensify health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those without access to air conditioning. Compounding the danger, overnight temperatures will remain high, with lows only dipping into the upper 70s, offering little relief.
Officials warn that heat-related illnesses are likely to increase significantly, and they are encouraging residents to take proactive measures to stay safe.
Precautionary measures include:
-Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids
-Remaining in air-conditioned buildings when possible
-Avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun
-Checking on relatives, neighbors, and pets
