(Des Moines) The KSOM/KS95 News Team won two awards at the Iowa Broadcasters Association Annual Banquet in Des Moines Thursday.
Tom Robinson and Mandy Billings won an award in the Breaking News Story category for their compilation of live coverage during the tornado that struck the City of Minden, along with follow-up reports on the damage in Pottawattamie and Shelby counties. A special thanks goes out to Kevin Ferguson and Greg Ponsar, who were out storm chasing on April 26, 2024, and followed the tornado into Minden. They provided real-time reports as the tornado touched down and described the damage they witnessed in town.
Mandy Billings also received an award for her May 22nd Evening Newscast, which featured coverage of the Greenfield tornado, updates on recovery efforts in Minden, and several other local stories.
The gavel was passed to Bill Saluk, General Manager and Vice President of KSOM/KS95, who will serve as the President of the Iowa Broadcasters Association for the upcoming year.
The Iowa Broadcasters Association, founded in 1951, represents over 200 radio and TV stations across the state. It supports free, over-the-air broadcasting through education, advocacy, and proactive legislative efforts.
These two awards are in addition to the 11 awards the News and Sports team won during the Iowa Broadcast News Association banquet in April.
