(Washington D.C.) The HALT Fentanyl Act passed the U.S. House this week and now heads to the President’s desk.
Zach Nunn, who represents Iowa’s 3rd Congressional District, said he is proud of the legislation, calling it a direct response to challenges seen in Iowa.
Zach Nunn said Iowa is now number two in the country for preventing fentanyl overdoses.
Nunn said the HALT Fentanyl Act will permanently classify fentanyl as a Schedule I drug. It provides federal prosecutors with the statutory clarity needed to bring immediate charges against traffickers and dealers, holding them accountable. The act also equips law enforcement with new seizure authorities without delay.
The House also passed the SUPPORT Act, which funds key recovery programs. This legislation reauthorizes critical initiatives aimed at helping individuals overcome substance abuse and avoid falling back into the cycle of dependency. Zach Nunn’s provision, known as the Community of Recovery Reauthorization Act, invests nearly $20 million in local support for recovery programs in communities across Iowa.
Nunn said overall this is a win from beginning to end.
