(NAFB) Recent cattle on-feed reports show producers are starting to keep a few more heifers in their herds, suggesting that herd rebuilding may be underway. Dr. Derrell Peel, livestock market economist for Oklahoma State University, says the rebuild appears to be starting slowly.
It’s not a full-scale herd rebuild yet.
No drought in the Southern Plains is also encouraging producers to think about rebuilding their herd numbers.
According to Peel, significant beef production won’t increase until 2028, and beef supply will be squeezed even tighter, in the meantime, as fewer cows and heifers enter the pipeline.
