(Atlantic) The Atlantic School Board discussed the Facilities Master Plan during its meeting on Wednesday.
The board reviewed the plan from SVPA Architects, which outlines proposed projects and a projected budget. The total cost is expected to be under $40 million. The plan includes several major updates: improvements at Washington Elementary, renovations at Schuler Elementary, renovations and an addition at the Middle School, and an addition at the High School, which will include a new field house.
Board Member Laura McLean asked whether the district planned to conduct a survey or seek community input regarding the proposal. Superintendent Dr. Beth Johnsen said she had spoken with Jerry Gallagher from the Donovan Group about that possibility.
Board Member Jodi Stowater-Goodrich noted that most people in the community are likely unaware that the plan is in development. Board Member Kristy Pellett added that she is interested in hearing not only from the community but also from school staff about the scope of the proposed projects.
Dr. Johnsen responded:
Dr. Johnsen said a steering committee will be formed, which will include two board members. The committee will review what has already been done, outline the current plans, and explain why certain decisions were made. She said several steps will be taken between now and July 1 to move the process forward.
After extensive discussion, the board agreed to move forward. Dr. Johnsen will send the information to Piper Sandler and forward the Master Plan to Ahlers & Cooney to draft the petition language needed for collecting signatures.
