(Avoca, IA) — Tri Center and AHSTW could not complete their baseball game last night — the lights went out in the top of the 5th inning and did not come back on so it will have to be completed at a later date.
Something must have been in the air. Maybe it was the full moon. Maybe a black cat got into the fuse box. Maybe somebody broke a mirror. With Tri Center leading 10-3 in the 5th, the outfield lights went out. The staff had to turn all the lights out and let them rest for 10 minutes but when they tried to turn them back on nothing happened so the game was suspended.
The Trojans had taken the lead in the top of the first inning against Vikings Sophomore Sage Blotzer making his first ever varsity start. Tri Center sent 10 men to the plate and scored six runs — five of which came with two outs. Carter Kunze, Cael Corrin, Tristin Gunderson and Trenton Huebner each had RBI singles, Brody Weidner added a RBI double and another run came in on an error.
AHSTW answered back with three runs off Tri Center starter Carter Kunze who walked the first two batters he faced. After Cash Freeman singled with one out to load the bases, Kunze struck out a batter but Blotzer reached on an error to score one, Sam Sturm singled in a run and Freeman scored on a wild pitch. Tri Center led 6-3 after one.
Blotzer, however, gave up back to back leadoff walks in the 2nd inning and AJ Harder brought home a run on a RBI grounder. Corrin then hit a fly ball into medium center field, Ty Nelson made the catch and the throw went up the third base line to home but catcher Camdyn Dresen tracked it down and tagged out Carter Kunze as he went past for an incredible double play. The Trojans still led 7-3.
They tacked on 3 more runs in the top of the third highlighted by a 2 run single from Cael Witt. The Vikings got runners on against Tri Center reliever Baker McCarty but he got back to back grounders to end the 2nd, back to back strike outs to end the 3rd and a pop out and grounder to end the 4th. AHSTW stranded 8 baserunners in the first 4 innings.
In the top of the 5th, Tri Center had a 10-3 lead and Tristin Gunderson got a leadoff single and shortly after arriving at 2nd base on an error, the lights went out and that ended the action. The game is officially suspended and will have to be completed at a future date.
For AHSTW, Aiden Akers went 2-2 with a walk and run. Cash Freeman was 1-3 with a run. Sam Sturm was 1-1 with a RBI and walk.
For Tri Center, Cael Witt was 1-2 with 2RBI and a run and 2 SB. Tri Center was 10-11 in stolen bases on the night. Tristin Gunderson was 2-2 with a RBI. Trenton Huebner was 2-2 with 2 runs and a RBI.
