(Missouri Valley, Iowa) — Six people, including three children, were injured in a chain-reaction crash on northbound Interstate 29 near mile marker 80, near Missouri Valley.
According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred around 4:11 p.m. on Saturday. The six injured people are identified as:
*Jens Walter Marttinen, 22, of Dassel, Minnesota
*Laurie Ann Stee, 64, of Gary, South Dakota
*Chad Donald Cantrall, 50, of Altoona, Iowa
*A 1-year-old girl, a 9-year-old girl, and a 16-year-old boy
According to the Iowa State Patrol as traffic was slowing and merging into the left lane due to a previous accident in the east ditch. A vehicle that had nearly come to a stop was rear-ended, triggering a domino effect that ultimately involved several vehicles. One of the vehicles went airborne and landed upside down in the median.
EMS transported Cantrall, Stee, and the 16-year-old to Missouri Valley Hospital. Marttinen was airlifted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. The two young girls were flown to Omaha’s Children’s Hospital.
The crash shut down traffic in both directions between the Missouri Valley and Modale exits for several hours.
Responding agencies included the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office, Missouri Valley Fire Department, Mondamin Fire and Rescue, Logan Fire and Rescue, and Harrison County EMA/Dispatch.
The incident remains under investigation.
