(Red Oak, IA) The Red Oak Tigers softball season is underway and is not off to the strongest start. The Tigers started off the year 2-2 and has now lost three straight games. However, the beginning of this year may be deemed a successful one for Red Oak as they have been a program struggling to find stability in the past couple of seasons.
With head coach Justin Williams taking over the program, it will be the fourth head coach in five years for the Tigers, and he is hoping to find some stability in the team, after the Tigers have won just six games total in the last three years.
Williams feels they are in a good spot in the season.
Red Oak comes into this season with a revamped defense, with six new starters, including two eighth-graders that hold down the left side of the infield. Josie Sampson and Kaylee Erickson will have to grow up in a hurry, and Williams knows there are going to be mistakes.
Williams says they just need to get out there and play the game.
The offense has been producing much more than last year so far, as they’ve already scored more than half of their total runs from the entire season a year ago. Kaylee Erickson currently leads the team in batting average, hitting a solid .417, while crossing the plate six times thus far.
Red Oak will travel to Clarinda to take on the Cardinals at 5:30 pm.
