(Underwood, IA) — Nobody as of yet has challenged the Underwood baseball team — the Eagles have played five games and have five blowout wins and rightfully are ranked number one in the Coaches Baseball Poll in Class 2A. Garrett Luett has played near perfect baseball — the future Iowa Hawkeye threw 4 2/3 innings in last night’s 13-1 win over Tri Center and did not allow a hit, waking just one and striking out 12. He threw only 64 pitches plus went 1-2 with a RBI double and 2 runs scored. It was the first time that Luett has been retired at the plate this season — going 9-10 in the first 5 games. Underwood Head Coach Andy Vanfossan says that Luett does not care what his stats are, he just wants to win
Underwood lost some key senior pitchers from last year’s state championship team and Vanfossan is relying on some young arms to back up Luett in the rotation and they have responded — Freshman Hudson Ross has an ERA of 1.62, Freshman Gavin Miles has an ERA of zero, plus Senior Easton Robertson has an ERA of zero. Vanfossan believes his staff might be stronger this year
Both freshman are also doing it with the bat — Ross is hitting .400, Miles .667, Roberston .429, Ryker Adair .471, top to bottom Underwood is tough but Vanfossan believes his team will be challenged this year and they have to be ready to meet that challenge
Underwood will host Riverside tonight then visit Logan Magnolia on Thursday.
