(Anita, IA) — The CAM Baseball team has started the season 2-0 and tonight they face Southwest Valley, coverage on KSOM. The Cougars suffered a devastating injury last year when Junior Chase Spieker went down with an injury that affected the start of his senior season.
Spieker completely tore his knee last July — the ACL, MCL and both meniscus all were in shreds and he faced a complete rehabilitation. It was nothing new for Spieker who had a similar injury that kept him out his freshman season. Spieker was the quarterback of the football team that had high expectations last fall but suddenly Spieker was on the sideline and he was not happy about it
Spieker began the long road back — crutches for two months and then a brace after that. Eight months of rehab and he was back in the spring and decided to play golf to be with his teammates and just in time because CAM ended up going to the state golf tournament
Spieker does not look back — he does not reflect on what might have been if he had been healthy. Would the football team go further in the playoffs with him in the line up? Same for basketball? Instead Spieker has learned to appreciate the simple things
This baseball season will the swan song for Spieker — he does not plan on athletics in college instead going to Iowa St. to major in finance so this summer will be his last time suiting up in competitive sports. He has high hopes that this team can have a big season
Chase Spieker and CAM host Southwest Valley today, coverage on KSOM and Western Iowa Today TV, first pitch at 5:30.
