(Denison) The time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer” for teen drivers. According to Iowa State Patrol Trooper and District #4 Public Information Officer Shelby McCreedy, it’s no coincidence that this dangerous period coincides with the summer. With school out and more people traveling, there’s a noticeable increase in teen drivers on the roads — and, tragically, a rise in teen-related traffic fatalities.
Trooper McCreedy points to several key contributing factors: cellphone use, excessive speeding — the leading cause of traffic deaths in Iowa — and the sheer increase in driving frequency during the summer months. All of these elements combine to create a heightened risk for young drivers.
She emphasizes the importance of parents discussing the serious risks associated with driving with their teens. Open communication can make a life-saving difference.
McCreedy also warns that even minor crashes can result in fatal outcomes, underscoring the need for caution every time a teen gets behind the wheel.
