(Glenwood) Benn Christian’s sacrifice fly to centerfield led the Glenwood Rams to a 7-6 victory over the Atlantic Trojans in extra innings during a Hawkeye Ten Conference baseball game at Glenwood on Thursday night.
The Rams recorded seven runs on six hits, while the Trojans scored six runs on seven hits.
Myles Stanton led Glenwood with two singles; Charlie Hutchcraft drilled a solo home run. Benn Christian, Ryan Turner, and Korbin Pelzer had the hits for the Rams.
Kale Jensen led the Atlantic team with a single and a double. Sawyer Tarrell contributed two singles, while Zaydin Parker added a double. Gavin McLaren and Grant Petty each had base hits for the Trojans.
Zayden Parker hit a double at the top of the first inning, giving Atlantic an early 1-0 lead. Charlie Hutchcraft responded in the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run, tying the game at 1-1. Atlantic then gained momentum in the top of the fifth inning. Kale Jensen hit a two-RBI double, followed by Gavin McLaren’s RBI single, extending the Trojans’ lead to 4-1. However, the Rams quickly turned the tide in the bottom of the fifth, scoring five runs and taking a 6-4 advantage.
The Trojans responded with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Grant Petty led off with a single, followed by Corbin Ritter, who walked. Kale Jensen then hit a 2-RBI double, scoring both Petty and Ritter. Gavin McLaren added to the scoring with an RBI single that brought Jensen home, giving the Trojans a 4-1 lead. However, Glenwood answered back with five runs in the bottom of the inning, sending ten batters to the plate. The home team capitalized on three walks, a hit batter, and a two-RBI single by Korbin Pelzer to take their first lead of the game, 6-4.
The Trojans rallied in the top of the seventh inning, scoring two runs and keeping the Rams scoreless in the bottom half to extend the game into extra innings. Sawyer Tarrell connected with a single, while Zaydin Parker reached base on an error. Both Tarrell and courtesy runner Zander Killion crossed home plate for the Trojans.
In the eighth inning, the Rams secured the victory. Graham Newberry started the rally by drawing a walk, followed by Myles Stanton, who hit a single. Benn Christian then hit a deep fly ball to center field. Newberry tagged up on the catch, allowing him to score and giving the Rams a 7-6 win after eight innings.
Glenwood now stands at (1-2) for the season and will play Council Thomas Jefferson in Council Bluffs, while Atlantic, currently at (0-3), will travel to Harlan on Monday for a doubleheader.
