(Atlantic, IA) The Atlantic softball team started off its quest for a Hawkeye 10 title last night with the conference opener on the road against Glenwood. After dropping the first game of the season to Missouri Valley 9-7, the Trojans were able to get the win 6-2.
The game started off quick for the Trojans, as they took the lead 1-0 in the first thanks to a lead-off home run from the catcher, Lila Wiederstein. That makes it the junior’s second home run in the first two games of the season.
Peyton McLaren lead the way for Atlantic in the pitcher’s circle throwing a complete game and allowing just two runs on nine hits.
Head Coach Terry Hinzmann thought McLaren threw very well, despite not having some her best stuff.
Atlantic wasn’t done after the first inning and piled on one run in the second and third inning, leading 3-1 thru three innings. Then in the fourth inning, the Trojans piled on two more runs to take a 5-1 lead and were able to see out the rest of the contest.
Zoey Kirchhoff had a big night at the plate going 3 for 4 with a double. Wiederstein also had a good night at the plate going 2 for 5 with a home run and a double.
Atlantic will hit the road and take on Ballard tonight at 7 pm, before taking on Denison Schleswig in a double-header in Denison with the first pitch at noon. The double-header against Denison is a make-up date from Tuesday, May 27th.
