(Corning, IA) — Southwest Valley will finally get a chance to play baseball tonight (Wednesday) as they open their season against East Mills. The Timberwolves have had games canceled because of weather and because of lack of numbers with some of the players competing in the state track meet. Southwest is coming off an 11-16 season but they did advance to the District Finals. Head Coach Keegan Longabaugh does lose 8 seniors from last year’s squad and he has no seniors this year. He does have a core coming back that will especially help in the pitching department
Junior Gavin Wetzel hit .329 last year with 13 RBI and led the team with 17 stolen bases; Sophomore Brody Crozier hit .304; Junior Wyatt Mendenhall hit .260; while Sophomore Walker Bissell only hit .136 his freshman year. Longabaugh will rely heavily on these guys to produce runs
Longabaugh will have to trust in some of his young players to grow up early to help out the vets
8th grader Hudson Bissell could see time in the infield and 8th graders Griffith Wetzel and Caleb Brown could see time at DH. The Timberwolves will play at East Mills tonight, host Essex on Thursday, and visit East Union on Friday.
