(Omaha) As the days grow longer and the weather heats up, the American Red Cross encourages everyone to prioritize safety while enjoying summer activities like swimming, camping, and grilling.
Emily Holly, Regional Communications Manager for the Nebraska-Iowa Red Cross, says grills cause over 10,000 fires annually. She says always grill outdoors, and never leave the grill unattended.
Holly’s top tips:
*Set up the grill in an open space, away from homes, decks, and trees.
*Use long-handled tools made for grilling to avoid burns.
*Wash hands, utensils, and work areas before preparing food.
*Keep perishables chilled in coolers with ice or freezer packs.
*Use separate plates and utensils for raw and cooked foods to prevent cross-contamination.
