(Greenfield, IA) The softball season has nearly begun for the Nodaway Valley Wolverines and this year, things will look a lot different. After a tough season last summer with the community being affected by the tornado, the Wolverines were forced to play nearly 20 games in 25 days in the month of June. After finishing last year with a record of 9-12, Nodaway Valley adds new faces and more talent with the addition of Orient-Macksburg, who will be playing softball with the Wolverines this summer.
Co-Head Coach Ryan Zenor is very excited for the season that lies ahead.
Orient-Macksburg finished their season a year ago with a record of 15-12 and were led by Emma and Ella Boswell. Emma Boswell had an outstanding season last summer and batted .580, while also tallying 41 RBIs and six home runs. Emma’s batting average was good enough to put her in the top ten among all classes last season. As for Ella, she batted .459 for the Bulldogs last season while also starting 14 games in the pitcher’s circle.
For a team who lost its everyday starter from the past three years, Zenor says she will do most of the pitching duties for the team.
The Wolverines only lose one senior who received significant playing time a year ago, and return eight starters. With the addition of the girls from Orient-Macksburg, Zenor says there has been a lot of competing for spots in practice.
Nodaway Valley will start its season on Thursday, May 29th, at Mount Ayr, starting at 7:00 pm.
