(Audubon, IA) — It seems like Audubon is on the move to the Rolling Valley Conference but the Audubon school board still has to vote on the matter. The RVC has invited Audubon and IKM Manning to join the conference and the Audubon board discussed it at last night’s monthly meeting. Audubon Athletic Director Sean Birks says there are two good reasons for leaving the Western Iowa Conference and that is enrollment and competition
Currently, Audubon has the lowest enrollment of the schools in the Western Iowa Conference but if they join the RVC they would have the 2nd highest enrollment. Birks also pointed out that Audubon has only won one conference title in the last ten years and that was a co-op title last year in softball. Birks also told the board that Audubon would save mileage with the switch — the average trip in the WIC is 49.6 miles while the average trip in the RVC is 37.8. Superintendent Trevor Miller pointed out that Audubon currently does not meet certain conference standards in some sports in the WIC but are grandfathered in. He recommended to the board that Audubon accept the Rolling Valley’s invitation
Birks believes that if Audubon decides to make the switch, it could be a domino that could trigger other schools to move conferences in the area. IKM Manning has a similar invitation to join the Rolling Valley Conference but they tabled discussion until next months school board meeting. Birks recommends that if school joins the RVC it would begin in the 2027-28 school year. The Audubon school board did not put the issue to vote using this meeting for discussion but a final vote is expected next month.
