(Greenfield) The Adair County Sheriff’s Office has received at least five reports regarding a phone scam in which the caller falsely claims to represent the Sheriff’s Office, possibly even impersonating a deputy.
In each case, the caller alleges the person missed a court date, failed to respond to a subpoena, or skipped jury duty. The scam escalates with threats of an arrest warrant and demands for bond money.
One resident reported that the caller knew his address and, after a brief pause, was even able to provide the name of the current sheriff.
Sheriff Jeff Vandewater emphasized that while he may occasionally contact individuals about warrants, subpoenas, or civil matters, no legitimate call from the Sheriff’s Office will ever ask for money to be sent online or over the phone.
If you receive such a call, do not send money or share personal information. Instead, verify any suspicious communication by calling the Sheriff’s Office at (641) 743-2148 or stopping by in person.
Bond payments should only be made in person at the Sheriff’s Office/Jail or the courthouse Clerk of Court’s Office.
When in doubt, always contact law enforcement to confirm.
