(Omaha) Omaha has elected a new mayor, marking a historic milestone for the city. On Tuesday, voters cast ballots for mayor, city council seats, and a proposed city charter amendment.
John Ewing Jr. received 48,693 votes, or 56.32 percent, while incumbent Jean Stothert garnered 37,758, or 43.68 percent.
KETV News reported that around 7,000 early voting ballots remain to be counted on Friday, along with 200 to 300 provisional votes expected to be tallied next week.
John Ewing Jr., the Douglas County Treasurer, made history as Omaha’s first Black mayor. A Democrat, Ewing brings extensive public service experience to the role, having served nearly 25 years with the Omaha Police Department and 17 years as county treasurer.
He is set to be sworn in on June 9.
